@Matt the Fox: It's nice that you're doing that but in the future please say something else besides "first comment."

Reply Matt the Fox, May 14th, 2012, 2:30 pm

@foxpuff: Killjoy. But fine, I'll try to think of something else to say.

@Matt the Fox: It's just that if you keep posting first comment it can get annoying. I just wanted to prevent you from getting into trouble.

Well, this could get a bit confusing with Mario's whole "no alternates; all contradictions are equally canon" thing. I'm not sure how it works either; but there's only one Mario, and only one Luigi. With six contradicting backstories.

@jakeroo123:
Mario Galaxy 2.

Reply jakeroo123, May 16th, 2012, 9:41 am

@AuraX: I did say ALL contradictions.

Reply AuraX (Guest), May 16th, 2012, 2:49 pm

@jakeroo123:
Mario Galaxy 2 is stated to happen in an alternate universe.

Oh, are we counting the Paper Mario series? Because I'm pretty sure that's AU as well.

Reply jakeroo123, May 16th, 2012, 3:17 pm

@AuraX: I don't believe any such thing has ever been stated.

They aren't, Paper Mario is referenced in other games, and vice versa.

There is no AU in Mario. The games have no timeline; and each game has a different degree of attempting to give the series a continuity. Eventually, everything connects together. The resulting convoluted mess of contradictions, confusion, and nonsense is Mario's canon. The only way for anything to be AU would be for it to not reference another installment; and never be referenced by another installment.

Basically, Mario canon makes no sense and doesn't leave room for alternates.

@jakeroo123:
...super mario bros. super show?

Reply jakeroo123, May 16th, 2012, 4:50 pm

@AuraX: Though the references are more general and less explicit (Brooklyn; personalities; etc.), the show does get referenced a few times.

Reply AuraX (Guest), May 17th, 2012, 3:55 pm

@jakeroo123:
...

...um...

...The Mario Bros. movie?

Reply jakeroo123, May 17th, 2012, 5:03 pm

@AuraX: Unfortunately, yes. Like the cartoons; it mostly leaves its mark on characterization and background elements.

Reply AuraX (Guest), May 17th, 2012, 8:49 pm

@jakeroo123:
And you're absolutely sure about all of this?

Where did you get this information?

Reply jakeroo123, May 17th, 2012, 8:57 pm

@AuraX: I'm pretty sure.

A lot of this information I got from looking for it within the games themselves, as well as seeing what the manuals have to say.

Reply AuraX (Guest), May 18th, 2012, 7:48 am

@jakeroo123:
Well it could just be references, and nothing more.

Like, for example, Sonic and the Black Knight has Sonic eating Chili Dogs in the beginning, as a reference to other continuities where Sonic likes Chili Dogs. It doesn't mean that these continuities happened in the game universe, it's just a nice little reference.

I know it's not related to Mario, it's just an example. So unless there's any actual evidence you found that actually states that "Super Mario bros. Super show happened" or "Mario bros. movie happened" then it's probably just a nice little reference, you know.

Reply jakeroo123, May 18th, 2012, 11:04 am

@AuraX: Apart from the games referencing other things (which is all I've mentioned at this point) and one game having a plot that makes Mario AU implausible; there is also the fact that Mario continuity works like that of a cartoon. That is, there is so little consistency that it seems like everything should be AU, but in almost every case it actually means that absolutely nothing is AU and the franchise just doesn't make any sense.

Reply AuraX (Guest), May 18th, 2012, 5:13 pm

@jakeroo123:
Which game has the plot that makes AU implausible?

Reply jakeroo123, May 18th, 2012, 6:16 pm

@AuraX: Super Paper Mario. Not because of dimensional travel; but because the Light Prognosticus' prophecy would be very fallible if it were the case.

Reply AuraX (Guest), May 20th, 2012, 2:34 pm

@jakeroo123:
Coincidence that this comes up while Chuggaaconroy is doing a let's play of that very game.

I shall continue watching it, and see if the prophecy you speak of indeed leads to an implausibility of Alternate Universes.

Reply jakeroo123, May 20th, 2012, 3:03 pm

@AuraX: The biggest part is the description of how to find the legendary hero our of every person in the mutliverse... The only details the prophecy gives is the hero's appearance; and, as the book is not truly prophetic, leaving room for mistakes would not be an option.

Reply AuraX (Guest), May 21st, 2012, 8:33 am

@jakeroo123:
Perhaps.

However, what if there is more than one multiverse?

Reply jakeroo123, May 21st, 2012, 8:50 am

@AuraX: That's not really how it works - multiverse, by definition, cannot be plural. They did not actually use the word in the game, but the definition of multiverse was paraphrased and emphasized.

Reply AuraX (Guest), May 21st, 2012, 7:38 pm

@jakeroo123:
It's not exactly what I'm trying to say...

ugh why must I be crap at explaining stuff

Reply jakeroo123, May 21st, 2012, 7:48 pm

@AuraX: I... think I got what you meant...

Reply AuraX (Guest), May 22nd, 2012, 7:51 am

@jakeroo123:
What I meant.

Was that there would be a multiverse containing paper mario, and a few other series besides it in the multiverse.

Then there would be another multiverse containing the main series mario verse, and probably the sonic games verse because olympic games.

And there would be other multiuverses containing other series, like LoZ, Doctor Who, MLP, Transformers, Bionicle, Metroid, Pokemon... does this explain it any better?

Reply jakeroo123, May 22nd, 2012, 9:54 am

@AuraX: As I've said before, direct references to the events of Paper Mario are made in other games, and vice versa.

Most of those you mentioned actually linked to Mario through a series of crossovers (not counting Smash Bros, because those are enchanted toys), with two of them being directly linked.

Reply AuraX (Guest), May 22nd, 2012, 1:17 pm

@jakeroo123:
How deep are these references?

Reply jakeroo123, May 22nd, 2012, 1:49 pm

@AuraX: Let's see, the star spirits re-appear; the castle as it is for most of Paper Mario (That is, when Peach's castle is on top of Bowser's) is seen again (they seem to have used a screen shot, even); and the game is directly mentioned (along with Super Mario Bros, Super Mario World, and Super Mario 64) at one point.

The Paper Mario series itself directly mentions Super Mario Bros and Luigi's Mansion; in addition to referencing many other games.

Reply foxpuff, May 22nd, 2012, 2:47 pm

@AuraX and @jakeroo123: Can you two just cut the conversation short? This isn't exactly a long conversation zone to begin with. -_-'

Reply jakeroo123, May 22nd, 2012, 3:10 pm

@foxpuff: I'm fine with that... Really, I never expected it to be a long conversation... Or even one at all...

Reply AuraX (Guest), May 22nd, 2012, 4:20 pm

Eh, I'm fine with that too.

Honestly, I really shouldn't question the continuity and story of Mario anyway. It's kinda weird anyways.
